One sentence in the kitchen

This is going to sound very small written down.

Six months ago, after an evening, the three of us were in the kitchen having a cup of tea before he went home. Entirely relaxed. My husband said something about how we had ended up doing all this, and the man we see said, lightly and with no edge at all, that most couples who start this are usually solving a problem they will not name.

That was it. He was not talking about us specifically. He said it the way you would say most people who take up running are avoiding something. Then he finished his tea and left and we all laughed about something else.

I have thought about that sentence almost every week since.

The trouble is that I do not know whether he was right. We are happy. I would have said, before that evening, that we started this because we both wanted to and for no other reason. And now I have spent six months auditing our marriage for the unnamed problem, and the honest position is that I cannot rule it out, because how would anybody.

I have not mentioned it to my husband. I have not mentioned it to him. It has just sat there.

Is this the sort of thing you raise six months late, or is it obviously my own thing to sort out? And has anybody else had one stray comment from somebody outside the marriage do this much work in their head.

Where this goes next

Nothing on this board is a scheduling problem. It is the day after, the feeling that turned up late, and the part somebody cannot say out loud even here. The third one is about words rather than feelings, because which word you use changes what the thing is.
