For newcomers, short denial is usually the way to go. My wife and I began with a single week. We are slowly adding one day at a time to our cycle. After three months, my denial period had stretched to two weeks. A few months later it was still two weeks, then we moved up to 17 days, and eventually settled on three weeks. For couples just starting out, gradually increasing the duration is key.
So, which is better: short or long? It really depends on the couple. Personally, I believe a denial period should last between two and six weeks. Anything beyond six weeks feels extremely long to me, while anything under two weeks seems too brief.
Yesterday, my wife and I decided to push our cycle out to six weeks. The current stretch will be four weeks, followed by five weeks next time. After that, we aim for a consistent six-week rhythm.
