The surprise was being wanted out loud by somebody who had to say it
Looking for somebody who will keep saying the thing rather than assuming it
Ten years of running a household teaches you to be needed constantly and wanted almost never. Those are not the same and I had stopped noticing the difference until a man I barely knew had to actually say, in words, in a moment where he could easily have said nothing, that he wanted to see me again. That sentence did more than anything which came after it.
I am not saying my marriage is short of affection. It is not. But a long marriage runs on assumption, which is a comfortable and largely invisible thing, and a stranger has no assumption available to him. He has to say it or nothing happens at all.
Thirty seven, the western suburbs, two years open. One arrangement of about a year that ended when his work changed and the evenings stopped lining up. My husband knew everything, liked him, and was more put out than I was when it finished.
What I want is somebody who will keep doing that. Say the thing. Ask for the evening rather than hinting at your availability. I am not asking for romance and definitely not asking to be swept anywhere. I am asking for plainness, which turns out to have been the part I wanted all along.
I am out past most of the city and I know what that costs on a wet Wednesday. If the distance is going to become a grievance by August, better a no now.
Before the first drink Replying goes through the connected platform, so nothing about you is shared until you decide to share it. Take contact slowly and keep identifying details back until trust is earned. Meet somewhere public the first time, with your own way home from it, and if you are a couple then go together. Tell someone outside it where you are going. Never send money to someone you have not met. And if a post or a reply reads wrong, flag it rather than talking yourself out of the feeling.
