The tablet on the windowsill

Nine years without a single problem and then last Sunday.

Her sister was here for lunch. The tablet lives in the kitchen, on the windowsill, where it has lived for years and where anybody in the room can see it. A message came in and the screen lit up with the first line of it visible.

It was from the man we have been seeing since the spring. It was not explicit and it was not obviously anything. It said something about Thursday and used a word we use.

Her sister was about four feet away, looking directly at it, and then looked at me, and then said something about lunch.

I have no idea whether she read it. I have no idea whether it would have meant anything if she had. I spent the rest of the afternoon running the sentence back and constructing innocent explanations for a question nobody asked.

What has actually rattled me is not that afternoon. It is that we have been doing this for nine years and had somehow never thought about the tablet. We are careful people. Separate account, sensible passwords, nothing on the family calendar, a rule about not messaging during the day. And the entire apparatus was defeated by a notification on a windowsill because we set that tablet up in 2019 and never thought about it again.

My wife thinks I am overreacting and that a fragment of a message about a Thursday is not evidence of anything. She is probably right. She also did not see her sister’s face.

So the question for people who have been at this a long time. What are the failure points you found the hard way? Not the obvious ones. The ones like ours, that were fine for years until one Sunday. And has anybody had a family member actually work it out, and what happened after?

Where this goes next

Years in, nothing breaks loudly. The agreement goes unopened, the safety call becomes a text and then sometimes a text, the third becomes a friend, and the jealousy either leaves or moves to a different room. These are the three pages about slow change.
